Deny Self

Mark 8:34-38

Jesus called his disciples and the people to him.

Jesus: Whoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Whoever will save his life will lose it; but whoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.

What will it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

What shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of man shall be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

Whom Do Men Say I Am?

Matthew 16:13-20

Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi.

Jesus (to his disciples): Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

The disciples: Some say that you are John the Baptist, some say Elijah; and others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

Jesus: But whom do you say that I am?

Simon Peter: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Jesus: Blessed are you, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood have not revealed it to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Then Jesus instructed his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.

Leaven of the Pharisees

Matthew 16:5-12

The Pharisees and Sadducees tested Jesus by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. (vs 1)

Then Jesus and the disciples left by boat.

When they came to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, they realized they had forgotten bread. (Mark 8:16 tells us they had “no more than one loaf.”)

Jesus: Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

They reasoned about his meaning.

The disciples (among themselves): Jesus said this because we brought no bread.

Jesus perceived what the disciples thought.

Jesus: Oh you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves, saying, because we brought no bread? Do you not yet understand, nor remember the five loaves that fed the five thousand, nor the seven loaves that fed the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up after each of these meals? How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread, but that you should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

Then the disciples understood that Jesus did not bid them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Mark 8:17-21

Jesus knew what the disciples were reasoning.

Jesus (to the disciples): Why did you reason, because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive, nor understand? Have you yet hardened your heart? Having eyes, do you not yet see? And having ears, do you not hear? And don’t you remember? When I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?

The disciples: Twelve.

Jesus: And when the seven loaves among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?

The disciples: Seven.

Jesus: How is it that you do not understand?

Discerning the Times

Luke 12:54-56

In chapter 12, so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another. (vs 1)

Jesus (to the people):

When you see a cloud rise out of the west, immediately you say, “A shower is coming” and it is true.

When the south wind blows, you say, “There will be heat” and it happens as you say.

You hypocrite, you can discern the face of the sky and the face of the earth. How is it that you can’t discern the times?

A Sign from Heaven

Matthew 16:1-4

The Pharisees and the Sadducees came. Testing Jesus, they asked that he would show them a sign from heaven.

Jesus: When it is evening and the sky is red, you say, It will be fair weather. In the morning, when the sky is red and threatening, you say, it will be foul weather today. Oh you hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky; can’t you discern the signs of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall no sign be given but the sign of the prophet Jonah.

And he left them, and departed.

Mark 8:11-12

The Pharisees came forth and began to question with Jesus, seeking of him a sign from heaven, testing him.

Jesus sighed deeply in his spirit.

Jesus: Why does this generation seek after a sign? Truly, no sign shall be given to this generation.

Jesus Fed 4,000

Mark 8:1-10

The crowd was very great, and they had nothing to eat.

Jesus called his disciples to him.

Jesus: I have compassion on the multitude, because they have been with me three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them away hungry, they will faint on the way to their own houses: for some of them came from afar.

The disciples: From where can a man get enough bread to satisfy these men here in the wilderness?

Jesus: How many loaves do you have?

The disciples: Seven.

Jesus commanded the people to sit down on the ground.

He took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave it to his disciples to set before them; and they did set the bread before the people.

And they had a few small fish. Jesus blessed them, and commanded the disciples to set them before the people also.

So they ate and were filled. They took up of the broken meat that was left, and it filled seven baskets.

They that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

And he entered a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

Bread of Life

John 6:47-71

Jesus was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. (vs 59)

Jesus: Truly, He that believes in me has everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and they are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

The Jews (arguing among themselves): How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

Jesus: Truly, unless you eat the flesh of the Son Of man, and drink his blood, (communion) you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, has eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. He dwells in me, and I in him. As the living Father has sent me, and I live by the Father: so he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers ate manna, and are dead: he that eats of this bread shall live for ever.

Many of his followers: This is an hard saying; who can accept it?

Jesus (knowing his followers murmured at it): Does this offend you? What if you shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? It is the spirit that lives; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you that do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that did not believed, and who would betray him. No man can come to me, except it were given to him of my Father.

From that time many of his disciples went away and did not follow him any more.

Jesus (to the twelve): Will you also go away?

Simon Peter: Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Jesus: Haven’t I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

He spoke of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for it was Judas that would betray him, being one of the twelve.

Jesus Walked on Water

Matthew 14:22-33

After feeding the 5,000, Jesus instructed his disciples to get into a ship and to go before him to the other side, while he sent the crowd away.

When he had sent the crowd away, he went up into a mountain alone to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.

But the ship was now in the middle of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

In the fourth watch of the night (between midnight and 2am) Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled.

The disciples: It is a spirit.

And they cried out for fear.

But Jesus spoke to them.

Jesus: Be of good cheer; it is I. Don’t be afraid.

Peter: Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water.

Jesus: Come.

And when Peter came down out of the ship, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.

But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid and began to sink.

Peter: Lord, save me.

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.

Jesus: Oh, you of little faith, why did you doubt?

When Peter and Jesus came into the ship, the wind stopped.

Then the disciples came and worshipped him.

The disciples: Of a truth you are the Son of God.

Jesus Fed 5,000

John 6:1-15

The passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. And Jesus crossed over the sea of Galilee, which is also called the sea of Tiberias. A great crowd followed him because they had seen his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

Jesus went up into a mountain and sat there with his disciples. Jesus lifted his eyes and saw a great crowd coming to him.

Jesus (to Philip): Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

He asked this to test Philip, because Jesus himself knew what he would do.

Philip: Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take just a little.

Andrew (Simon Peter’s brother and one of the disciples): There is a boy here, who has five loaves of bread, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

Jesus: Have the men sit down.

Now there was lots of grass in the place. So the men sat down, there were about five thousand.

Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he gave bread to the disciples, and the disciples gave to them that were sitting down; and Jesus took the fishes; gave thanks, and he gave fish to the disciples, and the disciples gave to them that were sitting down, as much as they wanted.

The people were filled.

Jesus (to his disciples): Gather up the leftovers, so that nothing will be wasted.

They gathered the leftovers together, and they filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above what the people had eaten.

The men (who had seen the miracle that Jesus did): Truly, this is that prophet that should come into the world.

When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain alone.

Possessed in the Tombs

Mark 5:1-20

Jesus and his disciples went to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

When he came out of the ship, immediately a man with an unclean spirit met him from out of the tombs. He lived among the tombs; and no man could bind him, not even with chains. He had often been bound with fetters and chains, and he had plucked the chains asunder and had broken the fetters in pieces. Neither could any man tame him.

He was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying and cutting himself with stones always, night and day.

But when he saw Jesus from far away, he ran and worshipped him.

He cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I urge you by God, that you do not torment me.

Jesus: Come out of the man, you unclean spirit. What is your name?

The unclean spirit: My name is Legion: for we are many.

And he begged Jesus that he would not send them away out of the country.

Now there was a great herd of swine feeding near the mountains, about two thousand.

All the devils (begged): Send us into the swine.

And Jesus allowed it.

And the unclean spirits went out of the man and entered into the swine. Then the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea and were choked in the sea.

They that fed the swine fled and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.

They came to Jesus and saw him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

And they that saw it told them how it happened to him that was possessed with the devil and also concerning the swine.

They began to ask Jesus to depart out of their coasts. And when Jesus entered the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil begged him that he might be with him.

But Jesus did not allow it.

Jesus: Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and has had compassion on you.

And the man left and began to tell in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him: and all men marveled.
