Possessed in the Tombs

Mark 5:1-20

Jesus and his disciples went to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

When he came out of the ship, immediately a man with an unclean spirit met him from out of the tombs. He lived among the tombs; and no man could bind him, not even with chains. He had often been bound with fetters and chains, and he had plucked the chains asunder and had broken the fetters in pieces. Neither could any man tame him.

He was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying and cutting himself with stones always, night and day.

But when he saw Jesus from far away, he ran and worshipped him.

He cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I urge you by God, that you do not torment me.

Jesus: Come out of the man, you unclean spirit. What is your name?

The unclean spirit: My name is Legion: for we are many.

And he begged Jesus that he would not send them away out of the country.

Now there was a great herd of swine feeding near the mountains, about two thousand.

All the devils (begged): Send us into the swine.

And Jesus allowed it.

And the unclean spirits went out of the man and entered into the swine. Then the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea and were choked in the sea.

They that fed the swine fled and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.

They came to Jesus and saw him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

And they that saw it told them how it happened to him that was possessed with the devil and also concerning the swine.

They began to ask Jesus to depart out of their coasts. And when Jesus entered the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil begged him that he might be with him.

But Jesus did not allow it.

Jesus: Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and has had compassion on you.

And the man left and began to tell in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him: and all men marveled.
